Internal linking is how your pages connect to each other. It does three jobs: it helps search engines discover pages, it signals which pages matter, and it distributes link equity.
Earning external links is hard and expensive. Internal linking is entirely under your control and costs nothing.
How link equity flows
Your homepage usually holds the most external links. That value flows outward through the links you place on it. A page that cannot be reached within three clicks of the homepage misses most of that flow.
Rule: your revenue pages should sit no more than three clicks from the homepage.
Orphan pages
A page with no internal links pointing to it is an orphan. Even if it is in your sitemap it is treated as unimportant and rarely crawled. Run a crawler and list your orphans — most sites have a surprising number.
Anchor text
The clickable text describes what the destination is about. Three rules:
- Be descriptive. "Click here" carries no information. "Technical SEO audit checklist" does.
- Vary it. Linking to the same page with identical text every time does not look natural.
- Keep it in context. A link inside a sentence is worth more than one stacked in a "related posts" block at the bottom.
The topic cluster structure
The most effective architecture: one comprehensive "pillar" page per major topic, surrounded by "cluster" pages covering subtopics. Cluster pages link to the pillar, and the pillar links back to each cluster.
This signals topical authority to search engines and keeps users inside the topic.
Common mistakes
- Putting everything in the menu. A menu with a hundred links marks nothing as important.
- Only linking to new content. Older, well-performing pages need links too.
- Automated related posts. Algorithmically chosen links are usually irrelevant and carry little value.
- Linking to redirected URLs. Internal links should always point at the final destination.
- Using nofollow internally. There is no reason to
nofollowyour own pages.
Where to start
List your highest-impression pages in Search Console — those are your strong pages. Then identify pages that convert but rank poorly. Link from the strong ones to the weak ones, in context, with descriptive anchor text.
On most sites this single exercise produces measurable ranking gains within a few weeks.
