A backlink is a link another site gives you. Search engines read it as a vote of confidence. It has been one of the strongest ranking signals for twenty years, and still is.
But quality decides, not quantity. Ten links from relevant, trusted sites beat a thousand irrelevant ones.
How to judge link quality
- Relevance: is the linking site about your subject?
- Authority: is that site recognised in its field?
- Placement: is the link inside the content, or in a footer or sidebar?
- Anchor text: is it meaningful, or "click here"?
- Traffic: does the link send real visitors?
The last one is the best filter: a link that sends real people is valuable to a search engine too.
Methods that work
Publish original data
Research drawn from your own data is the most reliable link magnet. Journalists and writers look for data, and cite it when they find it. An annual industry survey collects links for years.
Build a free tool or calculator
A small web tool attracts far more links than an article. Automate a calculation everyone in your industry currently does by hand.
Broken link repair
Find dead links on sites in your field, write the current equivalent of that content, and tell the site owner. Acceptance rates are high because it helps both sides.
Provide expert commentary
Follow the platforms where journalists request expert input. Fast, substantive answers get you cited in high-authority publications.
Risky tactics
- Buying links. When detected it triggers penalties, and the links you paid for get removed.
- Private blog networks. Effective short term; when discovered, site value goes to zero.
- Reciprocal link deals. At scale they form a detectable pattern.
- Comment and forum signature spam. No value, and it damages reputation.
Measurement and realism
Link work takes months to show effect. Do not expect ranking movement in the first quarter. Track: referring domains (not total link count), the topical closeness of linking sites, and referral traffic.
One caveat: you can rank without links. On low-competition long-tail queries, content quality alone is enough. Start link work when you hit a ceiling on competitive terms.
